PowerChord.app is a set of musician tools including chord lookup, circle of fifths explorer, and progression builder, with piano and guitar interfaces.

It is designed for musicians, singers, songwriters, music students or anyone else interested in writing or learning more about music.

Keyboard Tool

The Keyboard tool helps you find chord positions and chord names on the keyboard. You can also play notes by clicking or touching the keys.

Selection Modes

You can change the selection mode to change what happens when you touch a key on the keyboard. Available options are:

  • ⦸ = None: Use this to play notes without selecting them
  • 1 = Single note: Use to toggle individual notes on and off
  • M, m, 7 M7, m7 dim = Chord: Use to select all the notes in a chord with the specified quality

Lookup a chord by its notes

Select two or more notes on the keyboard. If the selected notes form a chord it will be displayed in the Chord field.

Find the notes in a chord

Use the Select Chord buttons to select a chord name and quality. If you would like to see a different inversion select a bass note using the final selection button.

Find the notes in a key

Use the Select Key buttons to select a tonic and quality.

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Use the letter and number keys to play and/or select keys on the keyboard. For example:
    • q = Low C, 2 = C#, w = D, etc...
    • z = Mid C, s = C#, x = D, etc...
  • Escape = Clear all selected keys
  • Space = Play selected notes

Guitar & Ukulele Tools

The Guitar & Ukulele tools helps you find chord positions and chord names on the guitar. You can also play notes by clicking or touching the fret.

Lookup a chord by its notes

Select two or more notes on the fretboard. If the selected notes form a chord it will be displayed in the Chord field.

Find the notes in a chord

Use the Select Chord buttons to select a chord name and quality. If you would like to see a different forms for the same chord use the plus and minus buttons to explore.

Find the notes in a key

Use the Select Key buttons to select a tonic and quality.

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Escape = Clear all selected positions
  • Space = Play selected notes

Vocals Tool

The Vocals tool helps you find your vocal range, practice, find the notes in a tune, or even tune an instrument. When using this tool make sure you are in a quiet place where there is as little ambient noise as possible.

Find your vocal range

To find your vocal range make sure the range finder is expanded. You will find your low and high notes separately.

  • Click one of the test buttons to start. It will automatically keep track of your lowest or highest note.
  • When you are happy with the note found click OK
  • If you don't want to keep the note click cancel
  • Once you have found both your high and low notes it will show your range

Practice Singing

You can practice singing using the Tune Capture tool. It will show the notes you sing in a graph along with a line to show how close you are to prefect. The color of the note in the graph will be brighter the closer you are to prefect.

  • By default the range will be set to your vocal range. Use the selectors if you want to change it.
  • Click Start then start singing and Stop when done
  • The graph will automatically extend when it reaches the right side up to a max of 60 seconds

Capture a Tune

If you want to figure out what notes are in a tune start the capture tool (see above) then hum or sing it.

Tune an Instrument

Start the capture tool (see above) then play an instrument. When the line is in the center of the note it is perfectly in tune.

Rhythm Sequencer

The Rhythm sequencer allows you build your own rhythms using a number of different percussion instruments, or select from one of the predefined rhythms.

  • You can specify the number of bars, beats per bar and number of divisions per beat to fine tune your rhythm
  • To add an instrument click the empty button in the last row
  • To remove an instrument click the x button next to the instrument's name
  • Click in the grid to toggle beats on and off
  • Rhythms can be saved to local storage and opened back up later

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Space = Play the rhythm
  • Ctrl+Z = Undo last edit
  • Ctrl+Y = Redo last undo
  • Shift+N = New rhythm
  • Shift+O = Open a rhythm
  • Shift+S = Save the rhythm
  • Escape = Clear the grid
  • + (plus) = Zoom grid in
  • - (minus) = Zoom grid out
  • 1 = Zoom reset

Progression Builder

The Progression Builder/Transposer is used to build chord progressions and transpose them to other keys. It guides you in selecting the best chord to follow another one.

  • To start choose a key for your progression
  • Click one of the chord buttons below to add a chord in the key
  • Suggested chords will remain lit and others will be dimmed, but you can still click them
  • You can add a chord not in the key by choosing one from the chord selector and clicking Add
  • To change the number of beats for a chord click the plus or minus buttons below the chord name
  • To remove a chord click the x in the top-right corner
  • Progressions can be saved to local storage and opened back up later
  • Choose a different key to transpose the progression to a different key

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Space = Play the progression
  • Number 1 - 7 = Add the chord with the chord number
  • Shift+O = Open a rhythm
  • Shift+S = Save the rhythm
  • Escape = Clear the progression
  • Backspace or Delete = Delete the last chord

Music Theory Tool

The Music Theory Tool has a circle of fifths explorer to help you find notes, chords and signature for any key.

  • Select a key and any mode from Major to Minor and Lydian to Locarian
  • Click on a chord to see its notes
